Service Description

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Reading Foundations Lab is a small-group summer program designed to strengthen the listening and sound awareness skills that support early reading and spelling development. Through engaging games, movement activities, and interactive language play, students learn to hear, identify, and manipulate the sounds within words. Students practice foundational early literacy skills such as rhyming, identifying beginning and ending sounds, blending sounds together to form words, and breaking words apart into individual sounds. These sound-based language skills help prepare children for stronger reading and spelling development as they progress through school. The Phonological Awareness Lab is not therapy. It is an enrichment-based program created to support students who may or may not qualify for school-based services but would benefit from explicit instruction in early sound awareness skills in a supportive small-group setting. GOALS OF THE PROGRAM The goal of this program is to strengthen phonological awareness skills that form the foundation for successful reading and spelling. Students will practice: • identifying and producing rhyming words • recognizing beginning and ending sounds in words • blending sounds together to form words • breaking words apart into individual sounds • identifying syllables in words • strengthening listening and sound awareness skills WHO THIS PROGRAM IS FOR This program is designed for students who are developing early reading skills and would benefit from additional practice with sound awareness and early literacy tasks.
